Health officials in New York City are investigating a cluster of 22 Legionnaires’ disease cases in Central Harlem, including one reported death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia that is treatable with antibiotics. It is not spread from person to person but is contracted by inhaling mist contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Common symptoms include cough, fever, headaches, shortness of breath, and nausea.

The New York City Health Department reports that diagnoses began around Friday, July 25.

The bacteria can develop in parts of plumbing systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, whirlpool spas, humidifiers, hot water tanks, and evaporative condensers used in large air-conditioning systems, according to city health officials.

“All operable cooling towers in the investigation area have been sampled, and the Health Department has directed building owners with initial positive screening results to initiate remediation within 24 hours,” officials said in an update issued Wednesday, July 30.

“Anyone with flu-like symptoms should contact a health care provider as soon as possible,” said Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Toni Eyssallenne in a statement. “Legionnaires’ disease can be effectively treated if diagnosed early, but New Yorkers at higher risk, like adults aged 50 and older, those who smoke or have chronic lung conditions, should be especially mindful of their symptoms and seek care as soon as symptoms begin.”

City health officials also reminded local building owners that they are required to regularly test water in their cooling towers for Legionella.

Despite the outbreak, residents in the affected area are advised that it remains safe to drink tap water, bathe, shower, cook, and use air conditioning at home.
