A driver suspected of being intoxicated struck spectators gathered for a Christmas parade in Kayenta, Arizona, killing one person and injuring others just before the event was scheduled to begin.
Navajo Nation police said the crash occurred Monday as people waited for the parade to start. The driver was arrested at the scene, according to reports from the Associated Press, AZFamily and The Arizona Republic.
In a statement dated Dec. 22, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said “three people were struck by a vehicle,” including “a young person in critical condition and a pregnant woman.”
“My heart is heavy after learning of the tragic incident at the Kayenta Light Parade,” Nygren said. “This is heartbreaking during a season meant for family, joy, and togetherness, and I urge everyone to take steps to prevent drinking and driving and to look out for one another.”
Authorities have not identified the driver, according to the reports.
