A mother is mourning after her newborn baby boy died in a car crash on the highway.
At around 2:50 a.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 21, a gray Toyota Hilux hit a silver Jeep Cherokee parked on the side of the northbound M1 in the Gold Coast, Australia, according to the Queensland Police.
“A male infant, who was in the Jeep, was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital; however died a short time later,” police said.
The driver of the Jeep, a 24-year-old woman, was also taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in serious condition.
Local media outlet 9News reported that the woman is the newborn’s mother. The baby boy, who was just 4 weeks old, was in the back seat at the time of the crash.
The Toyota driver, a 51-year-old man, suffered only minor injuries, police said.
9News added that the mother is now in stable condition.
Images of the crash showed both vehicles badly damaged on the side of the highway, with several emergency responders at the scene.
As of Monday morning, the M1 was reduced to one lane at the Smith St on-ramp, northbound.
“Drivers are urged to avoid the area and expect delays,” police said in a news release.
Investigations are ongoing.
