Two people — a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman — were killed during a shooting on the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue in Newark, N.J., around 7 p.m. local time on Saturday, Nov. 15, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Both victims were taken to University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Authorities said three additional individuals — an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year-old man — also suffered gunshot wounds. All three are currently in stable condition.

The shooting remains under investigation, and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Local outlet NJ.com reported that the shooting occurred in a primarily residential neighborhood made up of single-family homes. Some residents living nearby, including those in an apartment building on Leslie Street, were temporarily prevented from returning home afterward.

Neighbors described hearing multiple gunshots and “a lot of screaming” as the violence unfolded.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka addressed the tragedy in a statement posted on Instagram, calling it “a dark and devastating day in Newark,” noting that it followed another incident in which a 2-year-old died after falling from a 20th-story window.

“We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and family left behind in unspeakable pain and grief,” Baraka wrote, emphasizing that the city is working closely with law enforcement at all levels.

“We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide,” he continued.

Baraka also expressed his condolences, saying the city’s “hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this trauma,” and pledged ongoing support for the community in the wake of the shooting.
