A 10-year-old child from Michigan died after being hit by a vehicle near a school bus stop in Van Buren County.

According to a statement from the Van Buren County Michigan Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a “car versus pedestrian crash” on 22nd Street in Porter Township around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. First responders arrived to find the child, who was not publicly identified because of his age, and administered immediate medical care while authorities began investigating the scene.

Police said the driver involved — a 38-year-old woman in a white SUV — reported that she struck the child as he crossed the road after checking a family mailbox. She called 911 right after the collision.

The sheriff’s office noted that a Mattawan Consolidated Schools bus was traveling northbound on 22nd Street and preparing to stop for a student when the incident occurred. Officials did not say whether students were on board or witnessed the crash.

The child was transported to Bronson Hospital for further treatment but later died from his injuries, authorities confirmed in an update. No additional details were immediately available as the Van Buren County Accident Reconstruction Unit continues its investigation.

Mattawan Schools Superintendent Randy Fleenor informed the school community about the tragedy in a letter shared with local outlet WWMTTV, offering condolences to the affected family and acknowledging the emotional impact on students and staff.

He explained that the district’s crisis team would be working on support plans, adding that counseling services will remain available “as we navigate the days ahead.” Fleenor asked the community to hold the family and all those affected “in your thoughts during this profoundly difficult time.”
