An 11-year-old boy in Nevada has died following a tragic road rage shooting that occurred as his stepfather was driving him to school.

During a press conference on Friday, Nov. 14, the Henderson Police Department explained that the violent encounter began around 7:30 a.m., when the drivers of two vehicles engaged in a “verbal exchange” after one vehicle attempted to pass the other on the shoulder of the roadway.

According to authorities, the suspect — identified by the Henderson Police Department as 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns — fired a single shot from a handgun into the family’s vehicle. The bullet struck the boy, who was seated in the back.

Officials said the child’s stepfather then rammed the suspect’s vehicle, causing both cars to stop in the middle of the freeway. The drivers exited and became engaged in a heated confrontation.

A police officer was alerted by a passing individual and subsequently took the suspect into custody. Emergency responders transported the injured boy to a local hospital, where medical staff attempted lifesaving treatment, but he later died from his injuries.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and arrested the suspect on charges including open murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Jail records indicate that Johns is currently being held in the Henderson Detention Center on $20,000 bond.

In a statement on Facebook, the Henderson Police Department called the shooting a “senseless act” and urged drivers to remain calm and patient, especially during the busy holiday season when dangerous driving incidents tend to increase. “Tragedies like this are preventable,” the statement read. “It starts with all of us.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Henderson Police Department.
