A teenage girl was collecting water from a river when a nearby creature attacked her.
On Monday, Sept. 15, 15-year-old Shivani Kevat was filling pots with water on the banks of the Parvati River in Rajasthan, India, when a crocodile lunged at her, according to The Independent and the Hindustan Times, citing Kishanganj police.
The crocodile dragged Kevat, who lived in Mehatabpura village, into the river. This drew the attention of people working nearby, the reports said.
Some witnesses even took boats into the water, trying to scare the crocodile and rescue the girl, but their efforts were unsuccessful, according to The Independent.
Kishanganj police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Kevat went missing in the water, prompting a search and rescue operation. After several hours of unsuccessful searching, the operation was called off later that night, according to The Independent.
The next morning, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, Kevat’s body was spotted floating in the river by bystanders, as reported by The Independent and the Hindustan Times.
A medical team was called to the scene, but the teenager had already died, the Hindustan Times reported.
According to Kevat’s autopsy, she did not die from injuries caused by the crocodile. Her cause of death was drowning.
Police said there were no other injury marks apart from the deep wounds from the crocodile’s grip as it pulled her into the river, The Independent and the Hindustan Times reported.
After the autopsy, Kevat’s body was returned to her family, according to the reports.
