A 16-year-old girl and a 38-year-old man were killed after the ATV they were riding collided with a pickup truck in Tasmania.

The crash occurred on Saturday, Jan. 3, at about 4:30 p.m. local time on Murchison Highway, between the west coast towns of Rosebery and Zeehan, according to a statement from Tasmania Police.

Preliminary findings indicate that a Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck and a Honda ATV collided on the highway. Tourists who stopped at the scene attempted to provide medical assistance, but both the teenage girl—who was visiting from mainland Australia—and the 38-year-old man from Rosebery were pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck’s driver, a 40-year-old man, was not injured. Police confirmed he will undergo routine drug and alcohol testing, which is standard procedure following fatal crashes.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of both the deceased,” police said, adding that a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

In the days following the tragedy, family friend Ella Mackrell launched a GoFundMe campaign to help return the teenager’s body home and cover costs related to travel, accommodation, and funeral arrangements.

The girl was identified as Adasyn Wood Savin, a resident of Newcastle, New South Wales. According to the fundraising page, she was visiting Rosebery during the school holidays and was riding on the ATV with a family friend at the time of the crash.

“She was having fun, spending time with friends, and making memories the way any 16-year-old should,” Mackrell wrote.

“Tragically, while riding, Adasyn and one of our beloved friends, Whitt, were hit by a car, and both of them passed away at the scene,” she added.

Mackrell also expressed condolences to Adasyn’s family, including her parents, Amber and Adam, and her brothers, James Savin and Hayden Wood, noting that they are now facing life without their “beautiful sister, cousin, and friend.”

She went on to write that Adasyn and her brother Cooper—who died previously—are now “together again, watching over their family from the stars.”

As of Wednesday, Jan. 7, the fundraiser had raised more than $17,000.
