17 Hollywood Stars Who Have Left the U.S. — Citing Trump, the Need for ‘Serenity’ and More

While many people think of New York City or Los Angeles when it comes to where Hollywood stars live, some celebrities have chosen to settle far from the spotlight — even in other countries.

From Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres moving overseas after the 2024 election to Richard Gere relocating to Spain to be closer to his wife’s family, here are some stars who now call another country home.

Robin Wright

Robin Wright recently shared on The View that she has been living in the U.K. “All of the American productions I have done in the last three years have shot in England because of the tax break,” she explained. “It’s better than anywhere in Canada.”

The House of Cards star said she grew to love the U.K. after working there back-to-back. While she admitted concerns about the U.S. influenced her, she added that she simply feels “tranquil” living overseas.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

In late 2024, PEOPLE confirmed that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi had moved into a farmhouse in the English countryside.

During a July 2025 conversation, DeGeneres explained the move became permanent after Donald Trump’s second presidency. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to texts from our friends with crying emojis. We said, ‘We’re staying here.’”

She added that life in the countryside is “simpler,” and praised the U.K. for its politeness and better treatment of animals.

After Suits ended in 2019, Gabriel Macht and his family quietly left the U.S. “I don’t tell anybody where I live because I like to keep that under wraps,” he told PEOPLE.

Before returning for Suits LA, Macht had taken a long break to spend more time with his wife Jacinda Barrett and their two children, Satine and Luca.

Rosie O’Donnell

In March 2025, Rosie O’Donnell revealed on TikTok that she and her 12-year-old child Clay had moved to Ireland. She is now working on Irish citizenship.

She explained that politics played a role in her decision: “I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, but I decided this was best for myself and my child.”

O’Donnell said she feels safe in Ireland, even after President Trump threatened to revoke her citizenship.
