An 11-year-old girl is recovering after a mountain lion attacked her in Malibu, California.

The incident happened around 5:42 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10. Deputies responded to a home on the 32500 block of Pacific Coast Highway after reports of an animal attack, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

When deputies arrived, they found the girl in the backyard with a bite on her arm. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics treated her at the scene before her parents took her to the hospital. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and she is expected to fully recover, according to KTLA.

Officials believe the girl had been feeding chickens outside just before the attack. Deputies located the mountain lion and kept it contained until the California Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived.

The animal was later shot and killed. DNA tests confirmed it was the same mountain lion that attacked the child.

This incident comes nearly a year after another mountain lion attacked a 5-year-old boy during a picnic at Malibu Creek State Park. In that case, the child also survived, and the animal was put down because it was considered a danger to public safety.
