Three people — including two young boys — were killed in a devastating crash on a Texas highway Monday afternoon.

Authorities responded to the accident shortly after 3 p.m. local time on Oct. 27 near mile marker 524 on I-10 in Kendall County, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Investigators said a GMC Sierra pickup truck had stopped on the right side of the roadway for reasons still under investigation when a semi-truck struck it from behind.

When emergency crews arrived, 23-year-old Giselle Cristobal and two boys, ages 3 and 4, were pronounced dead at the scene. The 31-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to a San Antonio medical center, and a 2-year-old girl was airlifted to another hospital for treatment. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that the westbound lane of I-10 near the 534-mile marker was closed following the crash, with traffic diverted to alternate routes.

“Please expect significant delays and use alternate routes if possible,” officials wrote. “We ask everyone to drive carefully and avoid the area to allow first responders to work safely.”

By 8:30 p.m. local time, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the highway had been reopened.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
