Two men who allegedly posed as police officers while trying to break into a Houston home were shot and killed by the residents.
The incident took place around 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, when the Houston Police Department (HPD) received a call about a possible home invasion.
According to HPD Lieutenant Khan, the caller reported that two masked men had approached the house claiming to be officers there to serve a warrant, KHOU 11 reported.
Investigators told Click 2 Houston that the suspects were dressed in bulletproof vests, ski masks, and badges around their necks.
When the homeowners grew suspicious about the men’s identities, the suspects allegedly fired through the front door, striking a resident. The homeowner then returned fire, hitting both men, according to the outlet.
Despite officers’ CPR efforts, Lieutenant Khan confirmed that the suspects were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Right now, we don’t have ages on the suspects,” she said during the press conference, per KHOU 11. “They look to be younger, maybe at the most in their 30s.”
Khan added that the residents were not injured and the suspects never made it inside. A child who was also in the home was unharmed, ABC 13 reported, citing HPD.
Khan noted that the homeowners’ suspicion grew because their Ring camera showed no police cars, lights, or backup. “It’s just two people, and they’re masked up,” she said. “Thankfully, no one else was hurt.”
Detectives have interviewed neighbors as part of the ongoing investigation, Click 2 Houston reported.
The HPD has not immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment as of Sunday, Aug. 24.
