A 2-year-old boy has died and five other people have been seriously injured after a broken-down vehicle was struck by another car on a major road near Peterborough, England.

Cambridgeshire Police said the collision happened at around 6:20 p.m. local time on Saturday, Dec. 20, on the A1 northbound carriageway. A Toyota Auris had broken down and was stationary in a live lane when it was hit by a Volkswagen Touran, according to a police news release.

The toddler, from London, was traveling in the Toyota and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five others who were in the same vehicle were taken to Peterborough City Hospital with serious injuries, police said. The 64-year-old driver of the Volkswagen, who is from Peterborough, was treated for minor injuries.

Police arrested the Volkswagen driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail until March 20.

“Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision,” said Sergeant David McIlwhan in a statement. The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers, he added.

McIlwhan also urged anyone who saw the crash — or who has dashcam footage but couldn’t stop at the scene — to contact investigators.

Police asked anyone with information to report it online, quoting incident 401 of December 20, or to call 101. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and a request for additional comment was not immediately returned.
