A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player has been charged in connection with the alleged stabbing of two of his teammates hours before a game.
On Monday, Nov. 24, offensive lineman Daniel Israel Mincey, 20, was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to NBC News, the Associated Press and NBC Miami.
Mincey is accused of stabbing two teammates on Saturday at the university’s Football Operations Building, NBC Miami reported, citing court records.
The incident occurred just hours before the UAB Blazers’ game against the University of South Florida, which UAB lost 48–18. Mincey was later booked into Jefferson County Jail and held on $90,000 bail.
A criminal complaint alleges that Mincey attempted “to intentionally cause the death of Jasire Peterson … by stabbing him with a knife,” according to NBC News.
A separate complaint states that Mincey’s alleged first-degree assault involved causing “serious physical injury to Joshua Underwood … by stabbing him with a knife.”

“We are currently focused on gathering information and reviewing the evidence, which has not yet been fully received,” Mincey’s family’s attorney, David Bigney, said, per the outlet. “We ask for patience as the legal process moves forward.”
“Saturday was a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics,” UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram said at a news conference Monday.
Interim head coach Alex Mortensen said that the two injured players have been released from the hospital and are “recovering.”
He added that the rest of the team will be offered counseling and the option to step away from practice if needed.
Both of the injured players are defensive linemen, according to NBC News.
