A 22-year-old college student in Utah has died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony over Labor Day weekend, police said.
Utah Tech University’s Police Department responded to a 911 call around 5:42 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 31, police said in a statement shared with PEOPLE by a university spokesperson. The call came from outside the university’s student housing.
When officers arrived, they found that Jordon Konanui-Kong, a freshman, had fallen from the balcony of his room in Campus View Suites II. The St. George Fire Department also responded to the incident, Chief Robert Stoker told PEOPLE via email.
“Don, as he goes by, was transported to St. George Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said, adding that an investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing.
Officials have not shared additional details about what led to Konanui-Kong’s fall.
A university spokesperson said the school and the Utah Tech Police Department are not answering specific questions about the case right now to avoid slowing the investigation.
“Utah Tech University is devastated by the loss of a member of our Utah Tech family. His presence will be deeply missed on campus,” the spokesperson said in the statement shared with PEOPLE, adding that mental health professionals from the school’s wellness center are available for students, faculty, and staff.
“We are thinking of the family and friends and will continue to support one another as we grieve together during this difficult time,” the statement added.
