28-Year-Old Woman Gives Birth to ‘Miracle’ Baby on Christmas Day Despite Not Knowing She Was Pregnant

An Illinois woman spent Christmas Day in labor — despite having no idea she was pregnant.

Melanie Smith, 28, of Zion, Illinois, went to a hospital in Waukegan after experiencing severe stomach pain on the holiday. Doctors there quickly made a shocking discovery: Smith was nine months pregnant, according to NBC Chicago.

“I thought I was dreaming,” Smith told the outlet. “A really intense dream, and any minute I’ll wake up.”

At first, she didn’t believe the diagnosis. “I thought they were lying to me,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is a Christmas prank. You’re just messing with me. I’ve been told I can’t have kids.’”

Smith was transferred to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, where she gave birth to a baby boy named Vincent, who weighed a healthy 8 pounds.

Although Smith had missed her period, she said she wasn’t alarmed because her menstrual cycle had always been irregular.

“I had some minor back pains, but none of the traditional symptoms,” she explained to NBC. “I didn’t have any morning sickness or anything like that. I didn’t even really grow a stomach.”

Doctors later told Smith she had experienced a cryptic pregnancy — a condition in which a woman doesn’t realize she’s pregnant. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can happen due to irregular periods, lack of typical pregnancy symptoms, or false-negative pregnancy tests.

Cryptic pregnancies are rare. Studies suggest about 1 in 475 pregnancies go unnoticed until around 20 weeks of gestation, while approximately 1 in 2,500 aren’t discovered until labor begins.

Smith described the experience as overwhelming, especially because she and her husband had not financially prepared for a baby. The couple initially considered placing Vincent for adoption but soon found their feelings shifting.

“I saw my husband hold Vincent for the first time and realized, ‘Oh, actually this is doing things for me. I can’t give up my kid anymore,’” she said. Her husband later described their son as a “Christmas miracle.”

For Smith, the unexpected arrival of Vincent turned out to be life-changing. “It was the best surprise,” she said, “for someone who really hates surprises.”
