Three officers have died, and two more are in critical condition after shots were fired while responding to an investigation in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
A representative from the York County Office of Emergency Management told reporters that at 2:10 p.m. local time, York County 9-1-1 received reports of a “police incident in North Codorus Township.”
After the call, “numerous police and EMS units responded to the scene,” the representative said.
Colonel Christopher L. Paris, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, said during a press conference that many details are not being released yet because the investigation is ongoing.
“That having being said, we’d like to advise the community that there is no current active threat,” he said. “The situation today involved law enforcement officers who were shot. I can confirm that the shooter is dead.”
Paris confirmed that five officers were shot — three died, and two were taken to WellSpan in York. “They are currently listed in critical but stable condition,” he said.
At the request of the district attorney, Paris did not say which departments the deceased and injured officers belonged to.
While the Pennsylvania State Police investigate, Paris said the officers were at the scene “to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday.”
He said the investigation was “domestic-related” and that police shot the shooter.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the York County Office of Emergency Management said, “York County Commissioners are monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved.”
“We do not have further details at this time. All official statements will be released by law enforcement agencies leading the incident command at the scene,” the statement said.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said on X that he had been briefed and was heading to York County.
Lt. Gov. Austin Davis also shared a statement on X: “Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County. As we learn more, follow all guidance from police and stay away from the area.”
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said on X, “I am aware of the ongoing situation in York County. I urge all residents to follow the instructions of local law enforcement. I am en route to the area and am praying for all involved.”
