What began as a disturbing report of an abandoned infant in rural Tennessee has taken a tragic turn, as investigators later discovered four people dead just miles away. Now, authorities believe the two incidents may be connected.

On Tuesday, July 29, around 3:11 p.m. local time, the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a suspicious situation on Old Highway 20 near the Tigrett area, according to a statement posted on Facebook.

Witnesses reported that either a dark-colored minivan or a white mid-size SUV had left an infant—strapped in a car seat—on the front lawn of a random home. “Thankfully, a witness saw the car seat with the child and called 911,” the sheriff’s office noted in the post.

Later that same day, investigators revealed a grim development: four individuals had been found dead in neighboring Lake County, roughly 25 miles north of where the infant was abandoned.

In an update, Sheriff Jeff Box confirmed that the identities of the deceased were being withheld pending notification of their families.

“This is a deeply saddening day for our community,” said Sheriff Box. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.” He also expressed gratitude to Lake County Sheriff Bryan Avery and his department for their assistance in the case.

Authorities assured the public that they are actively pursuing leads. “The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to resolving both the abandoned infant case and the ongoing investigation at the crime scene,” the agency added. “We will continue to update the public as more information becomes available. Please remember everyone in your prayers.”

Earlier on Tuesday, before the discovery of the bodies, officials said they had been able to identify the infant and were looking to speak with three individuals: Cortney Rose, Matthew Wilson, and Adrianna Williams. Whether any of these individuals are among the deceased has not yet been confirmed.

On Wednesday, July 30, Lake County Sheriff Bryan Avery shared that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the case.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends, families, and the entire community impacted by this tragic situation,” Sheriff Avery said. “We know this is a difficult time, and we stand with you.”
