A 5-year-old girl has died after being swept into a storm drain in Sarasota, Florida.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Zaria Miller was pulled into a storm drain by a powerful current on Bahia Vista Street shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, according to CBS affiliate WTSP and NBC affiliate WFLA.
Authorities said the current formed after a water main broke during heavy rainfall.
According to a GoFundMe page created for her family, Zaria had been “playing outside with her brothers and tragically got sucked down a storm drain.”
Deputies reported that she was pulled under and carried nearly 100 yards before being found in a wooded retention area across from Sarasota Christian Academy, as noted by The Tampa Bay Times.
She was initially taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, ABC affiliate WWSB reported.

Kyle Weaver, a close family friend who organized the fundraiser, wrote, “It is with a broken heart I have to share that Zaria has received the ultimate healing, and is in the arms of Jesus. The family is grateful for all the love and support shown over the past few days.”
As of Friday, Aug. 29, the fundraiser had collected nearly $100,000 to help the family with medical bills, living expenses, and other needs during this time.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
