Eight members of a high school track team were injured in Anaheim, California, after a car left the roadway and crashed into a sidewalk where they were standing, authorities said.
On Wednesday, Dec. 10, at around 3:00 p.m. local time, a suspected DUI driver struck the teenagers near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and North Street, according to CBS News, abc7 and The Los Angeles Times.
The Toyota Corolla was reportedly traveling south on Harbor Boulevard when it veered onto the sidewalk and hit eight members of the Anaheim High School track and field team as they waited at a traffic light during a training run, the outlets reported.
“They were doing what they were supposed to do, wait, and they got hit by the car,” Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter told CBS News.
A 27-year-old man is under investigation for allegedly driving under the influence, though no arrests had been made as of the latest reports, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The Anaheim Police Department and Anaheim High School have been contacted for comment.
All eight students, who are between 16 and 17 years old, were taken to the hospital, per CBS News and abc7. While the extent of their injuries varies, all are expected to survive, CBS News reported.
The driver was also transported to a hospital with injuries. His condition has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Authorities said the team’s adult coach was running behind the group when the crash occurred, according to CBS News.
“As a parent myself, you send your kids to school, you trust they’re gonna be safe and a tragedy like this happens. It’s very unfortunate,” Sutter told CBS News. “I feel sorry for the coach who had to see this happen to his kids.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that footage captured by OnScene.TV showed students bleeding on the ground and a vehicle that had collided with a brick wall. The outlet also noted that CCTV video appeared to show the car veering to the right before jumping the curb.
