Robin Roberts is embracing both adventure and love during a meaningful break from Good Morning America.

On Sunday, July 27, the longtime TV anchor, 64, shared a heartfelt update about her temporary leave from the show, revealing she and her wife, Amber Laign, are currently in Kigali, Rwanda on a service trip that doubles as a celebration of their 20th anniversary.

“We’re in #Rwanda as guests of @inmuwetrust_ & @giantsofafrica celebrating young basketball players across Africa,” Roberts wrote in an Instagram post featuring the couple. “Every last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service.”

Marking their relationship milestone, she added:

“Wonderful way for the two of us to celebrate 20 years as a couple… it certainly has been an adventure.”

Friends and colleagues quickly flooded the post with support. GMA’s Gio Benitez commented, “How incredible!!! Happy 20 years!!” while ABC anchor David Muir left a red heart emoji.

Laign also reflected on their journey in a post of her own, sharing a video of youth chanting and dancing, captioned:

“20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey ❤️🌍.”

She elaborated, “Robin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we’ll never forget — in Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries. From dancing to community service that touched our hearts, this experience reminded us what truly matters: connection, purpose, and giving back. We’re beyond grateful to have shared this milestone in such a powerful and uplifting way.”

Roberts later posted a joyful video of Laign dancing with the group, joking, “No matter where we are in the world… she hears music and she’s just gotta dance! Never a dull moment with this one.”

The couple, who tied the knot in September 2023 after meeting on a blind date in 2005, had previously told PEOPLE in June that they were planning to mark their anniversary with an unforgettable adventure. “We’re actually going to Rwanda,” Roberts said at the time. “Because we wanted to celebrate that way, because our time together has been an adventure. And we thought, what better way than to be with the gorillas… in Rwanda?”

Laign also shared the key to their two-decade relationship: “We keep it fresh. You’ve got to keep it fresh, have our little date nights.”

Roberts’ return date to Good Morning America has not yet been announced.
