A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after a chunk of asphalt flew through the windshield of an SUV in Las Vegas, police said.
The frightening incident happened around 7:45 a.m. on Monday, July 28, in the Spring Valley area, according to a statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Authorities say a large piece of asphalt became dislodged from a passing vehicle on South Durango Drive and flew into the northbound lanes — slamming into a 2017 Honda Pilot. The boy, who was sitting in the back seat, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and was rushed to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.
A 34-year-old woman, identified as Makayla Engstrum, was driving the SUV. She and a 4-year-old boy, also in the vehicle, were not hurt. Police said Engstrum remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.
The relationship between Engstrum and the children has not been made public.
As of now, the investigation into what caused the asphalt to break loose is ongoing.
