After more than two decades of living and working in Arizona, a beloved restaurant owner in Peoria is now facing deportation.

Kelly Yu, the longtime owner of Kawaii Sushi—a popular local spot known for its warm atmosphere and loyal customer base—was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a routine check-in in late May. Despite having no criminal record, Yu is now in ICE custody and at risk of being removed from the country she has called home for 21 years.

Community Rallies in Support

Yu’s sudden detention has sparked a wave of public support. Friends, patrons, and employees have launched petitions and social media campaigns calling for her release. Supporters describe Yu as a dedicated business owner who helped build a sense of community through her restaurant. In her absence, Kawaii Sushi remains open under the care of family members and staff.

Representative Greg Stanton called the situation “heartbreaking” and said he was denied entry when he attempted to visit Yu at the detention facility. “Cases like Kelly Yu’s show why we need comprehensive immigration reform,” Stanton said.

Senator Ruben Gallego echoed the sentiment, pledging to do everything in his power to support her. “This is not how we should be treating members of our communities,” he said.

Legal Battle Underway

According to ICE, Yu is being processed in accordance with current immigration laws. Her legal team has filed appeals in an attempt to stop her deportation. While no hearing dates have been confirmed, her family and supporters continue to closely follow the proceedings.

For now, Yu remains separated from her family and her restaurant, while the community she helped foster pushes to keep her home.
