Authorities in Arkansas are working to uncover a motive after a teacher allegedly confessed to fatally stabbing a couple he had never met while they were hiking with their two young daughters at a state park.

Andrew James McGann, 28, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the brutal killing of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, on Saturday at Devil’s Den State Park. McGann was arrested Wednesday after a five-day manhunt and is being held without bond. He is expected to make his first court appearance Friday at the Washington County Detention Center.

The couple’s daughters, ages 7 and 9, were unharmed and are now in the care of family members.

Arkansas State Police Col. Mike Hagar said investigators are still searching for a motive in what appears to be a random and senseless act of violence. The scenic trails at Devil’s Den, a 2,500-acre park near West Fork, have remained closed since the attack.

According to investigators, Clinton Brink was attacked first, roughly half a mile into the trail. Cristen Brink managed to lead her daughters away to safety before returning to help her husband—only to be fatally stabbed herself.

Maj. Stacie Rhoads, who leads the department’s criminal investigation division, said McGann was arrested in a barbershop in Springdale, about 30 miles from the park. He reportedly cooperated with officers and confessed to the killings soon after being taken into custody. His DNA also matched blood found at the crime scene.

“In my 27 years with the State Police, this is one of the most heinous cases I’ve seen, especially given how random it appears,” Rhoads said.

Five-Day Manhunt and Dozens of Clues

McGann was tracked down through hundreds of public tips and extensive review of surveillance footage. Hikers who were in the area around the time of the attack submitted videos and photos to investigators, helping police build a timeline.

Authorities also released a sketch and a blurry photo of a person of interest seen from behind. Surveillance video near the park later helped identify McGann’s vehicle, which had tape obscuring its license plate. Within an hour of naming him a suspect, officers located and arrested him.

Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter confirmed the state will consider seeking the death penalty. McGann does not yet have legal representation, and it’s unclear whether he will request a public defender.

Teaching History Raises Questions

McGann holds valid teaching licenses in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma, with no reported disciplinary history, according to state records. However, officials are now reviewing his past employment more closely.

While teaching at Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, in 2023, McGann was placed on administrative leave for “concerns related to classroom management, professional judgment, and student favoritism,” according to the Lewisville Independent School District. He later resigned.

A parent of one of McGann’s former fourth-grade students said he appeared “cold” and detached. “My son came home upset multiple times,” said Sierra Marcum, who reported her concerns to the school principal.

After leaving Texas, McGann took a teaching position near Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the 2024–25 school year and resigned this past May. The district said he passed all background checks and had no issues during his tenure.

He had been hired by Springdale Public Schools in Arkansas but had not yet started work, the district confirmed.

Victims Recently Relocated to Arkansas

The Brink family had only recently moved to Prairie Grove, Arkansas, from South Dakota with their three daughters. Clinton Brink was set to begin a job as a milk delivery driver the Monday following the attack. Cristen Brink had previously worked as a licensed nurse in both South Dakota and Montana.

In a statement, the family said Clinton and Cristen died “heroes protecting their little girls.”

The investigation is ongoing.
