President Donald Trump on Friday warned that the United States is fully prepared to respond to any nuclear threats, following what he described as “highly provocative statements” by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, Trump revealed he had ordered two U.S. nuclear submarines to be repositioned “in the appropriate regions” as a precautionary response to Medvedev’s comments.
The former Russian leader, now serving as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, had earlier warned that Washington’s latest round of ultimatums—recently shortened from 50 days to just 10—could push the U.S. and Russia toward direct conflict.
Speaking with reporters before departing the White House for his New Jersey residence, Trump said, “When you talk about nuclear, we have to be prepared… And we’re totally prepared.”
Pressed on where the submarines were being moved, Trump declined to specify, saying only, “I do that on the basis of safety for our people… We’re gonna protect our people,” according to the Associated Press.
Earlier that day, Trump stated, “Based on the highly provocative statements from Medvedev, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
He emphasized the weight of such rhetoric, warning, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
US-Russia Tensions Mount Over Ukraine
The exchange comes amid rising tensions over Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The Trump administration has dispatched special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow in a renewed push for a ceasefire. Trump has also warned that new sanctions could be imposed if no progress is made within the new 10-day deadline.
The diplomatic clash was sparked by a social media post earlier this week in which Medvedev mocked Trump’s ultimatum strategy: “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10,” he wrote.
“He should remember two things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country,” Medvedev added.
Trump responded Thursday by labeling Medvedev a “failed former President of Russia” and advised him to “watch his words.” Medvedev replied, “Russia is right on everything and will continue to go its own way.”
