Matty Healy’s Mom Takes Swipe at Taylor Swift, Says She’s ‘Glad’ Being Singer’s Mother-in-Law Is a ‘Role I Lost’

Matty Healy’s mother, Denise Welch, didn’t hold back when discussing her son’s past relationship with Taylor Swift.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Thursday, July 24, Welch spoke candidly about the short-lived romance after Andy Cohen asked about Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department.

The record is widely believed to chronicle Swift’s brief time with The 1975 frontman, 36, especially in tracks like “Guilty as Sin?” and “Fresh Out the Slammer”, along with “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” and “loml”.

“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” said Welch, drawing gasps from the audience.

“Not that I have anything against her at all!” she clarified. “It was just — it was tricky.”

Welch added, “Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it.”

Despite the media spotlight on the relationship, Welch said her son handled it all with composure. “Matty has taken it all in completely good grace,” she shared.

She also mentioned that Healy has happily moved on and is engaged to model and singer Gabbriette Bechtel, who performs under the name Gabbriette. “He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella, who is gorgeous,” Welch said. “So, we’ve moved on.”

Healy and Swift initially met back in 2014, though they didn’t begin dating until nearly a decade later. In May 2023, they were photographed holding hands in New York City at Casa Cipriani shortly after Healy attended Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Nashville.

However, by June, the relationship had ended. At the time, a source told PEOPLE the romance was “always casual.”

Their brief involvement came shortly after Swift’s split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn, which sources said was due to “differences in their personalities” that became harder to ignore over time.

Not long after ending things with Healy, Swift began a high-profile relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.

The pop icon and NFL tight end, 35, first stirred romance rumors in September 2023 when Swift began showing up to Chiefs games. Kelce later revealed on The Pat McAfee Show that he had invited Swift to attend after watching her perform at Arrowhead Stadium during her Eras Tour, joking that he had “thrown the ball in her court.”
