The Tragic Incident That Took Kathryn Kipnis’ Life

A Florida woman now faces serious consequences after her reckless actions resulted in the death of an innocent pedestrian who was simply trying to get home.

Ivana Gomez, 32, was arrested after police say she was speeding through Miami in her BMW when she struck and killed 41-year-old Kathryn Kipnis. The collision was so severe that officials report Kipnis’s head went through the windshield, with some of her hair caught inside the vehicle.

A police officer witnessed the entire crash. Authorities say Gomez was driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph. When officers attempted to catch up, she accelerated even more. Eventually, they stopped her and took her into custody.

What follows is particularly disturbing—while being placed in the squad car, Gomez reportedly told officers, “it was just a homeless person that I hit and it is just an accident,” according to the police report.

Gomez Allegedly Showed Clear Signs of Intoxication

Once detained, it became obvious to police that Gomez was under the influence. The arrest report notes that she reeked of alcohol, had bloodshot, watery eyes, and there was fresh vomit inside the vehicle.

She failed a field sobriety test and shortly afterward requested a lawyer.

This week, police released bodycam footage showing the moments before Gomez was taken into custody on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide—though the video does not capture her alleged comment about the victim being “just a homeless person.”

Gomez Denies Saying That—But Prosecutors Disagree

Despite the statement being clearly documented in the police report, Gomez denies making the remark. At her initial court appearance in May, she told the judge she never said it, according to WSVN.

Prosecutors, however, stand firm.

During the hearing, Prosecutor Laura Adams described the impact, stating Gomez struck the victim with such force that “the victim’s head went into the vehicle, through the windshield, and some of the victim’s hair got caught on the passenger’s seat belt.”

They also confirmed Gomez’s blood alcohol level was .112—well over Florida’s legal limit of .08.

Kathryn Kipnis Was Not Homeless — She Was Simply on Her Way Home

Contrary to what Gomez allegedly told officers, Kipnis was not homeless.

Her father told NBC Miami that she lived in the neighborhood and was just walking home after spending the evening with friends.

What’s Next for Ivana Gomez?

Ivana Gomez is currently held on a $251,000 bond, facing multiple serious charges including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. If convicted, she could face a lengthy prison sentence.

This case has stirred outrage across social media—not only because of the dangerous driving but also due to the disrespectful manner in which Gomez reportedly dismissed the victim’s life.

We will continue to follow this story as it develops.
