A grandmother in Oklahoma is sharing a heartfelt warning after her 3-year-old grandson suffered a serious finger injury in a tricycle accident.
“In many ways, I blame myself,” Mandi Truman from Spencer told ABC affiliate KOCO. “But if sharing our story can help other families prevent something like this, I’m willing to speak out.”
In a GoFundMe she created to support her family during this difficult time, Truman described how her grandson’s hand got caught in the chain underneath the tricycle while he was trying to push it forward.
“Out of fear, he yanked his hand back, and that’s when his fingers were badly injured,” Truman wrote.
She explained that one finger was fractured and required stitches, while another was completely severed and couldn’t be saved. Thankfully, doctors were able to reattach an additional finger.
Truman recounted to KOCO that she was sitting on the back porch with her son when the accident happened. Her son moved the tricycle just right to free the boy’s hand, preventing further injury.
“If my son hadn’t acted quickly to release him, he could have lost even more,” she said.
As a single mom raising two sons, Truman revealed that this was her grandson’s second hospitalization in less than a month. She expressed how heartbreaking it is to see the little boy endure such pain.
She wrote in her fundraiser that she’s doing everything she can to stay strong but is overwhelmed. “I can’t work right now because I’m caring for him full-time, and bills are piling up.”
Appealing for help, Truman emphasized that every dollar donated will go directly toward keeping a roof over their heads, covering expenses, and ensuring her grandson has what he needs for recovery.
