President Donald Trump met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan at the White House on Monday, just days after calling for Tan to resign. Last week, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Tan should step down, saying he was “highly CONFLICTED.”
The criticism came after Republican Senator Tom Cotton questioned Tan’s ties to China, including his past investments in Chinese semiconductor companies and businesses linked to the country’s military.
Tan said he has the full support of Intel’s board and contacted the White House to correct what he called “misinformation” about his career.
After Monday’s meeting, Trump struck a much friendlier tone. On social media, he called Tan’s career “an amazing story” and said Cabinet members would work with Tan over the next week to share ideas with him.
Intel released a statement saying Tan and Trump had “candid and constructive” talks about strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing. The company thanked Trump for his leadership and said it looks forward to working with his administration to “restore this great American company.”
Intel’s stock rose more than 2% after Trump’s latest remarks. The shares had dropped 3.1% on August 7, the day Trump first called for Tan’s resignation.
