A 1-year-old girl from the Isle of Wight, U.K., has died from what police described as serious injuries, and her parents are now facing murder charges.

Emergency crews were called just after 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 1, to a home in Newport after reports that a child had been taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to Hampshire Police.

The toddler, identified as Jayla-Jean Mclaren, died two days later on Sunday, August 3.

Her family shared a short tribute through police, saying, “Mummy, daddy, and nanny will always love you. Fly high princess.”

The BBC reports that a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport and believed to be Jayla-Jean’s parents, were first arrested on suspicion of causing serious harm. They were released on bail, but later re-arrested and charged with murder. Both remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny said the case has caused “considerable distress” in the community.
“Our thoughts remain with all who knew and loved Jayla-Jean,” he said. “The arrests are only part of a much larger investigation to understand exactly what happened. Please avoid speculation, especially online, as it could harm the case.”

Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 or send tips online, using reference number 44250344990.
