A 14-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a car while riding his e-bike on the first day of school in Deltona, Florida.
The accident happened Monday morning, around 9 a.m., at the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Roble Lane, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The boy was riding east on Howland Boulevard and tried to cross Roble Lane at the crosswalk. At the same time, a Kia turning onto Howland Boulevard entered the crosswalk at a slow speed and struck him. The car dragged him about 15 feet before stopping, trapping him underneath.
Multiple witnesses, including a tow truck driver passing by, rushed to help. Together, they lifted the car off the boy and moved him to safety.
The teen was wearing a helmet and stayed conscious after the crash. He was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where he is in stable condition and expected to fully recover.
Authorities are investigating the crash and reminded both drivers and e-bike riders to be extra careful. The sheriff’s office highlighted the importance of wearing helmets, following road rules, avoiding phones or earbuds while riding, and keeping both hands on the handlebars.
“Education is key,” the sheriff’s office said. “Many e-bike riders are under 18. Supervised riding and formal training are strongly recommended.” Drivers were also advised to stay focused, especially in school zones, residential areas, and intersections, because e-bikes can move faster than regular bicycles.
