Comedian and TV host Bill Maher recently criticized ABC’s long-running talk show The View and its hosts, saying they might not be the best role models for women.
Maher, who hosts Real Time with Bill Maher, spoke to Drew Barrymore on her Club Random podcast. He said he liked some of the hosts, but added, “I don’t know if they’re really, at this moment, the best advertisement for women.” Barrymore laughed at the remark.
The current co-hosts of The View are Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin. Maher said he especially liked Goldberg and Behar. He also criticized some of the things the hosts say, suggesting their political comments aren’t always helpful, especially during elections.
In June, Maher and Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt criticized the show after Goldberg made a comment comparing being Black in America to being a woman in Iran. Hunt called the remark “a bit far.”
The View is on summer break but will return in September for its 29th season. Former host Rosie O’Donnell recently warned that the show could face cancellation due to President Trump’s criticism. In a TikTok post, she said ABC is reviewing the show’s “liberal bias,” which she suggested might be a step toward canceling it.
O’Donnell also accused the White House of trying to silence the show. The tension between The View and President Trump has been ongoing for years. Last month, the White House responded harshly to a Behar comment about Trump’s jealousy of former President Obama, calling her an “irrelevant loser” and criticizing the show’s ratings.
The View features a diverse group of women discussing news, politics, and celebrity gossip. Its six co-hosts bring different opinions, which has made it a frequent target for political debate.
