President Donald Trump announced that the National Guard and military could be used to help protect the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if needed. He also signed an executive order creating a new task force to oversee the Games.

The task force will work closely with the LA 2028 organizing committee, as well as local, state, and federal authorities. Vice President JD Vance will manage the day-to-day planning.

“This is going to be so safe,” Trump said. “We’ll do anything necessary to keep the Olympics safe, including using our National Guard or military.”

Previous host countries have also used military personnel for security during the Olympics. The LA Games will come after the U.S. hosts the 2026 World Cup.

Los Angeles has recently faced unrest following immigration-related protests, but Trump emphasized that the Games will be a special event. “The LA Olympics is shaping up to be a wonderful moment for America. It’s going to be incredible,” he said.

Since taking office for a second term in January, Trump has been very involved in sports events. He made history as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl in February, Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. That event had a large security operation, including the FBI, National Guard troops, and the Secret Service, especially after a terror attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day that killed 14 people.

Security at the Super Bowl included armored SWAT vehicles, rooftop snipers, and around 2,000 law enforcement personnel to protect more than 120,000 attendees.
