Man Upset After Brother Brings New Date on 10-Day Family Trip Without Telling Anyone

A man turned to the Reddit community for advice after a family vacation went wrong when his younger brother brought an unexpected guest.

The trip was planned as a 10-day getaway for close relatives and their partners, but one last-minute decision changed everything.

He explains that his oldest brother brought his wife, “who we’ve all known basically forever,” along with their baby. He brought his girlfriend, and his sister brought her boyfriend. He adds, “This was all communicated when the trip was originally booked,” and both non-married partners already knew the family.

However, his younger brother was single when the trip was planned and “never mentioned bringing anyone.” So everyone was surprised when “the day we all arrive at the cabin he has this woman with him” — someone no one had met before.

The man calls her Jill and says his brother invited her “last minute.” He explains, “I guess they’d been on a few dates, he’d mentioned he would be out of town and then suggested she come and she agreed.”

At first, he was annoyed about a stranger joining their family trip, but others reacted differently. “My sister and sister-in-law thought it was great… This is a great chance to get to know little bro’s potential new GF,” he recalls.

His girlfriend also noticed the awkwardness but ended up being “roped into operation let’s get to know Jill” even though she agreed the situation was “odd and annoying.”

Things got worse quickly. Jill reportedly “squandered all of her good will with her attitude and her copious drinking.” She drank a lot without paying and made his older brother and sister-in-law uncomfortable.

By the fourth day, “everyone minus little bro was sick of Jill.” When his older brother tried to talk to him about it, he “became very defensive” and asked everyone to “just try to be nice to Jill and avoid her when possible.”

The situation escalated when Jill began complaining about the baby. “She complained constantly about my niece, that she cried all night (not really) and kept her awake,” he writes.

At that point, he says, “I hit my limit and said my niece was actually supposed to be here, unlike her.” Jill replied that if they didn’t want her there, “maybe she should leave.”

Before anyone could respond, his girlfriend spoke up. “If that’s what you want to do, you should do it,” she told Jill.

Little brother asked Jill to stay, but she turned to the group and asked, “Does anyone else want me to stay?” When no one answered, she left with him for the airport.

When he returned without her, the younger brother was “annoyed with me for my comment.” The man responded, “This was his fault for not talking to any of us about this woman ahead of time.”

He also questioned his brother’s choice. “I asked why he invited someone he seemed to barely know,” he says, and his brother replied that he “didn’t want to be the only single person on the trip.”

Their sister stepped in and told them to stop fighting. They did, but “it was tense the rest of the trip.” Weeks later, his older brother asked him to apologize to smooth things over.

“Older brother has asked me to apologize now that the trip is well in the past,” he explains. “He said he agrees with me, but it would help bury the hatchet.”

The man feels he shouldn’t apologize and wants advice. “I don’t think I should apologize, but what does Reddit think?” he writes.

He also found Jill’s choice to join the trip odd from the start. “If I was a woman, and I was invited by an admittedly cool dude to spend ten days with three strange men and three strange women, I would not want to do that,” he says.

He tells his girlfriend it was “a HUGE indicator of something being off with her.” She agrees.

He adds that even he wouldn’t have accepted such an invitation. “Honestly, even as a man, I wouldn’t take that offer,” he says, “but yeah, I think it’s especially weird that a woman did.”

Now, the family is left with tension from a trip that was supposed to bring them closer together.
