A bride and groom asked their wedding guests to spend at least $250 each on gifts.
One frustrated guest shared a screenshot of the couple’s email on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum. The expensive request upset the Redditor so much that they created an account just to share their thoughts about the couple, calling them “greedy.”
The email, sent to the couple’s “friends and family” before the wedding, explained that the goal was to give “guidance for gifts so that nothing goes to waste.”
Because the couple already has everything they “need” for their home, they chose not to have a traditional wedding registry. Instead, they asked guests to contribute to their “honeymoon fund, spa days, and future home upgrades.” They mentioned buying a “bigger TV” and a “wine fridge” with the money.
The email said, “We kindly ask that all contributions be in cash or Venmo (no checks please!). Minimum suggested gift is $250 per guest, but feel free to be more generous if you feel so inspired. The experience we’re offering is worth it.”

For guests who preferred to buy a physical gift, the couple included two Amazon links. The first option was a pre-loved Gucci tote bag for $1,050. “It’s used so it’s cheaper,” they wrote. “It’s bad luck to give empty, be sure to throw a $20 in.”
The second option was a Traeger grill for $1,799.95.
“We know this is unconventional, but we’ve worked hard on making our day special for you, so we hope you can return the favor!” the couple wrote.
In the comments, Reddit users criticized the couple for their “obnoxious” gift requests.
“This is unbelievable. The audacity to imply the day is about the guests, so they should be willing to pay for it?!” one user wrote. Another added, “Or that their wedding is a transactional event. Why can’t people just want their friends and family to celebrate with them?”
