Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) faced a tense moment during a town hall in Dallas on Thursday night after a verbal attack from a member of the audience.
Crockett had been sharing a personal story about her grandmother — who she called one of her “favorite people in the entire world” — when conservative commentator Sara Gonzales interrupted with insults. Gonzales first shouted the congresswoman’s name, then quickly moved to attacking Crockett’s background and character.
“The people of Dallas deserve better than a fake ghetto hoodrat!” Gonzales yelled.
In a video Gonzales later posted to X, formerly Twitter, Crockett can be seen trying to calm the crowd, many of whom looked upset by the interruption. Still, Gonzales continued, accusing Crockett of being a “rich kid from Missouri” and calling her “spoiled.”
The confrontation led to angry reactions from other attendees. Security escorted Gonzales out of the event as she kept shouting. By the end of the video, police can be heard warning her to leave or face arrest.
Another video, shared by the Instagram account Dallas Weekly, showed Crockett addressing the audience with composure.
“This is part of the problem. I want y’all to be part of the solution,” Crockett said. “We are going to show these people that ignorance will not win today.”
The incident came just a week after far-right activist Laura Loomer targeted Crockett on social media. Loomer reposted a claim criticizing Crockett’s alleged treatment of her staff, writing, “Why are people surprised? This is typical DEI Shaniqua behavior.”
Crockett strongly rejected those accusations, calling them “slander,” “nonsense” and “lies.”
