A man from Staten Island and his mother are facing serious charges after police say he caused a deadly crash in Plainsboro, New Jersey during a dangerous BMW street race.
Alvi Limani, 20, is charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, reckless assault by auto, endangering others, obstruction, tampering with records, leaving the scene of a deadly crash, and driving with a revoked license that caused death or serious injury.
His mother, Vilma Vneshta, 42, is charged with hindering in the third degree. Both are being held without bail at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center.
According to New Jersey State Police (NJSP), the crash happened on the Garden State Parkway south just after 7 p.m. on June 29. Troopers found Albion Hysenaj, 20, of Staten Island, and another 20-year-old man from Staten Island who had both been thrown from their car.
Hysenaj and the other passenger were rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, but Hysenaj later died from his injuries. The second man remains seriously hurt.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said that two BMWs were racing on the parkway when the crash occurred.
Limani was allegedly driving one of the BMWs recklessly, weaving through traffic and going 112 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to arrest warrants. Police say his car hit two other vehicles and flipped over several times. The crash caused Hysenaj and the other passenger to be ejected from the car.
Afterward, police say Limani and his girlfriend, Emily Harrington, 19, of Staten Island, left the crash scene. Harrington is now charged with hindering, obstruction, and conspiracy to endanger another person.
The other driver involved in the BMW street race, Jeter Ogando, 23, of Perth Amboy, is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, endangering another person, and assault by auto.
Days after the crash, investigators say Limani fled with his mother to Miami in an attempt to leave the country.
On July 17, police arrested the two near Miami. Detectives say they had purchased fake Florida IDs, same-day passports, and plane tickets to Tirana, Albania. Video footage showed them being handcuffed on the airport tarmac.
According to jail records, both Limani and Vneshta are listed as non-citizens. Investigators also wrote in an affidavit that Vneshta is Albanian and still believed to have ties there.
The two remain in custody at the Middlesex County Department of Corrections.
