The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on July 8 the indictment of ten individuals for their involvement in what authorities described as a premeditated, military-style attack on the Prairieland Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center near Alvarado, Texas. The incident, which unfolded on July 4, resulted in serious federal charges including attempted murder of law enforcement officers and firearms-related offenses.

The Incident and Charges

According to the DOJ and federal court documents, the defendants—adorned in black tactical attire—initiated the assault by launching fireworks toward the facility. After approximately ten minutes, a group splintered off to vandalize vehicles and a guard post with graffiti, while others opened gunfire on law enforcement officers. One Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck, and unarmed federal agents were targeted with up to 30 rounds. Weapons seized included AR-style rifles, body armor, two-way radios, and extremist paraphernalia such as flyers reading “FIGHT ICE TERROR WITH CLASS WAR!” and a flag declaring “RESIST FASCISM – FIGHT OLIGARCHY.”

Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson condemned the event as “an ambush… not a peaceful protest,” pledging to prosecute the case under the most stringent statutes available.

Defendants Named

Those charged in the federal complaint are:

  • Cameron Arnold
  • Savanna Batten
  • Nathan Baumann
  • Zachary Evetts
  • Joy Gibson
  • Bradford Morris
  • Maricela Rueda
  • Seth Sikes
  • Elizabeth Soto
  • Ines Soto(Department of Justice, KEYE)

Context and Broader Efforts

This attack forms part of a broader trend of escalating clashes related to immigration enforcement. Earlier this summer, the DOJ also brought charges against a Portland protester accused of assaulting an ICE officer and causing property damage during demonstrations near an ICE office in Oregon.

Moreover, in Los Angeles, Alejandro Orellana, a Marine veteran caught on video distributing riot gear to anti-ICE protesters, was indicted for conspiracy to aid civil disorder. These actions align with a DOJ directive mandating U.S. Attorneys nationwide to prioritize and publicize cases tied to immigration-related protests.

Implications

Legal experts warn that the case strikes at the heart of First Amendment protections; while peaceful protest is constitutionally protected, actions involving weapons, ambush tactics, or violence cross a line that federal authorities say will not be tolerated.

The raid in Dallas was conducted jointly by the FBI, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, Homeland Security Investigations, ATF, and local law enforcement agencies in Johnson County.

Looking Ahead

As the ten defendants await trial, the DOJ’s aggressive stance signals a zero-tolerance policy toward violent acts targeting immigration enforcement personnel or facilities. The case underscores tensions around immigration policy and enforcement, as well as the fraught intersection of protest and criminality.
