Fans attending Coldplay concerts can still expect to see themselves on the Jumbotron.
The band brought its Music of the Spheres World Tour to Craven Park in Kingston upon Hull, England, on Monday, Aug. 18, where frontman Chris Martin lightheartedly referenced the viral kiss cam scandal involving former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot at Coldplay’s Boston show in July.
“We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens,” Martin told the crowd, according to HullLive and NME.
Reading a fan’s sign that said they’d seen Coldplay “three times in three months,” Martin replied, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”
He continued, “We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] a long time and it is only recently that it became a… yeah. Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
The July incident unfolded when the kiss cam spotlighted Byron and Cabot at the band’s Gillette Stadium concert in Foxborough, Mass. In a viral TikTok, the pair ducked and tried to hide, leading Martin to joke, “Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re okay. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
Both Byron and Cabot resigned from Astronomer following the viral attention.
Coldplay’s tour continues with a second show at Craven Park on Aug. 19, before moving on to multiple dates at London’s Wembley Stadium.
In response to the viral moment, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher teased the idea of filming fans during his Manchester show on July 20. “Do we have any lovebirds in the house? Don’t worry, we ain’t got any of that Coldplay, snidey f—ing camera s—. It doesn’t matter to us who you’re f—ing mingling with, or tingling with or fingering with. None of our f—ing business,” he told the crowd.
