A man has turned to online critics for advice after his girlfriend made a bold assumption about what he was willing to pay for in the name of love.

The man posted his dilemma on Reddit’s popular “Am I The A——?” subreddit on Monday, Aug. 18.

According to the original poster (OP), he had made a reservation at “a nice spot” for a casual dinner with his girlfriend. But upon arriving, he found not only his girlfriend but also “her parents, her brother, and even her cousin.”

Though OP didn’t mention discussing the surprise with his girlfriend beforehand, when the $400 check arrived, she allegedly expected him to cover the entire bill.

“She looks at me expecting me to cover it all,” OP wrote. “I told her I was happy to pay for our meals, but I didn’t agree to bankroll her entire family’s night out.”

The girlfriend reportedly became upset and told OP that a “‘real man’ wouldn’t have hesitated.” OP also said that her mother labeled him “cheap” for refusing to pay for the whole group.

The poster ultimately stood his ground, paying only for his and his girlfriend’s meals, leaving her to split the remaining cost with her family.

Unsurprisingly, the girlfriend was angry and claimed OP had embarrassed her. The man explained that he felt blindsided and frustrated by the assumption that he would pay for uninvited guests on what was meant to be an intimate dinner date.

Most Reddit commenters sided with OP, deeming him NTA, or Not The A——. When a fellow Redditor called his girlfriend “rude and entitled,” OP said he saw the issue as one of respect, not money.

“I’m always down to treat my partner, but being blindsided with her whole family and then being told a ‘real man’ should just pay felt more about testing boundaries than anything else,” he wrote. “I don’t want to be in a relationship where generosity gets taken for granted or turned into an expectation. That’s why I drew the line.” His comment received nearly 3,000 upvotes.

Many users pointed out that the situation raised red flags about his girlfriend and her family.

“It was a total power move. Her trying to establish how things were going to go down for the future,” one person wrote, with another adding, “Your GF is reading or watching TikTok crap about how a man should pay for everything, and she was testing you. Break up with this red flag parade family.”
