Slain Massachusetts teenager Kylee Monteiro, who was pregnant at the time of her death, sent a chilling final message to her sister before she was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Gregory Groom.
The 22-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday, August 20, after prosecutors revealed he confessed to the crime.
On Friday, August 8, Groom reported Kylee missing to Rehoboth Police, prosecutor Jason Mohan said, according to CBS News. Groom told investigators Kylee had recently left a residential program, taken a rideshare to his home on August 6, and planned to stay with him. She also told him she was 11 weeks pregnant and that he was the father. The two then argued over where she would live.
During that argument, Kylee sent a desperate text to her sister. According to Mohan, the message read: “He threw me on the ground and pulled my hair and strangled me. My phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg.”
Kylee had previously posted videos on TikTok sharing news of her pregnancy and spoke warmly of Groom, saying he treated her like “gold.” Her sister Faith also pushed back on speculation of abuse in their relationship, saying that wasn’t the case.
But Groom later admitted that after the argument, he shoved Kylee, causing her to fall and hit her head. He then stabbed her in the neck twice and once in the chest with a kitchen knife, using such force that the blade broke. Afterward, he buried her body about 20 yards from the house.
A close friend recalled that Kylee’s final conversation was deeply unsettling. “She was like, ‘I don’t feel safe right now, something’s not right.’ I tried talking with her after that, and she just stopped responding,” the friend said. “I just want her to know that we miss her, and we’re not going to stop trying to find her.”
Groom was arrested on Tuesday, August 19, and charged with murder. He has been ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on September 10.
