For 28-year-old Sara, buying her first home in Central Ohio was supposed to be a milestone moment. Instead, it quickly spiraled into a nightmare—one that impacted both her health and her finances.

Sara, who withheld her last name, purchased the property in May 2024. Within days of moving in, she began suffering from severe congestion and recurring sinus infections.

“Within days of moving in, I developed severe congestion and chronic sinus infections. Those eventually stopped, but, about six months in, my eyelid irritation began,” she told Newsweek.

At first, she couldn’t pinpoint the cause. Then, while going through documents left behind by the home’s previous owners, she discovered something unsettling.

“They left the house fully furnished,” Sara said. “I found medical files from the previous owners, which showed they also had eye issues. Around that time, I traveled to Cancun, and my eyes completely healed on the trip, which pushed me to investigate further.”

Sara shared her experience on her TikTok account, @applfrittr11, where commenters urged her to get her house inspected for mold.

“That’s when I connected with Mold Dog USA, who confirmed hidden mold sources throughout the home,” she explained.

The results were devastating. “Nearly every aspect of my daily life was centered in mold; working from home, exercising in the basement, showering, sleeping, even washing clothes. It was everywhere, and my dogs were exposed too,” she said. “The invisible nature of it was terrifying, especially when my husband didn’t have the same symptoms, making me feel like I was going crazy.”

What Is Mold Toxicity?

Mold toxicity refers to the harmful health effects caused by exposure to mold and the substances it produces. Molds thrive in damp or water-damaged areas and release allergens, irritants, and sometimes toxic compounds called mycotoxins.

While not all molds are inherently dangerous, some species can create these toxins under certain conditions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mold exposure can lead to allergic reactions, asthma attacks, respiratory problems, and irritation of the skin or eyes. People with asthma, allergies, weakened immune systems, or chronic lung conditions are at greater risk of serious complications, including lung infections.

In extreme cases, mold exposure has forced families out of their homes—and in rare instances, even contributed to deaths.

An Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) test declared Sara’s home uninhabitable, leaving her and her husband with no choice but to begin expensive remediation.

“Remediation is underway, but it’s expensive, invasive, and devastating. We’ve had to throw away most of our belongings because mold contaminates porous items,” Sara said.

Unfortunately, their insurance doesn’t cover mold damage. The couple is now facing enormous costs tied to remediation, medical care, and replacing their lost possessions.

“There are also legal complications suggesting the previous owners may have known, but, due to protections in their state, we likely won’t recover anything. It feels like mold has taken our health, our home, and our finances,” Sara said.
