Lil Nas X has pleaded not guilty to four felony charges following his Aug. 21 arrest.

On Monday, Aug. 25, the “Industry Baby” singer — who was taken into custody for allegedly assaulting a police officer last week — waived his arraignment and entered a not guilty plea to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE.

The judge set his bail at $75,000 and ordered Lil Nas X, born Montero Hill, to attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week. Authorities said they believe the rapper may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the arrest. However, the Associated Press reports that Nas’ attorney, Christy O’Connor, stated it is too early to determine as test results have not yet returned. She described the incident as “an absolute aberration in his life. Nothing like this has ever happened to him.”

Another attorney on Nas’ team, Drew Findling, told reporters outside the courthouse that he expects the rapper to post bail and be released on Monday.

“He’s never been in trouble for a split second in his existence, we’re not going to let one little event change the trajectory of his amazing life,” Findling said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s no way to have a sense of what happened this immediately, but we’re going to look into it and do the right thing.”

He added, “Anybody that has kids, you hear about things like this all the time. Don’t forget, he’s 26 years old. It’s not unusual for something like this to happen, particularly when you have the pressure of being recognized internationally like him.”

Lil Nas X’s father, Robert Stafford, also spoke briefly with reporters, saying his son is “doing great mentally” and requesting that people keep him in their prayers.

The rapper is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 15 for a pre-trial hearing.

A representative for the “That’s What I Want” artist did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The rapper appeared before a judge on Monday morning, TMZ reports. Under California law, convictions for felony battery on a police officer and resisting an executive officer carry potential jail sentences of up to three years and fines of up to $10,000 per charge.

On Aug. 21, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE that officers had responded to reports of a man “nude in the street” on Ventura Blvd just before 6 a.m. The suspect was confirmed to be the “Old Town Road” musician, who allegedly “batter[ed] an officer,” resulting in a booking for battery on a peace officer.

Lil Nas X was taken to the hospital for treatment following the arrest and was later discharged to complete the booking process, PEOPLE confirmed. According to the booking report, he was booked on the misdemeanor charge around 11:22 a.m.

TMZ published photos that appeared to show Lil Nas X walking on Ventura Blvd. in only underwear and boots around 4 a.m., hours after the arrest. Multiple calls had been made to law enforcement reporting a possible overdose, though authorities were unable to confirm this at the time.

In February, Lil Nas X shared a video discussing new music while acknowledging he had been “flaky” and “all over the place.” “These last few years were pretty difficult for me,” he said via a fan-shared video on X.

He added that fans can expect more intentional work from his music. “I’m just now, like arriving to this place of feeling confidence in myself and what I’m doing. And I’m trying to make sure I put intention towards my music and my vision and the creativity of it all,” said the “J CHRIST” artist.

In April, Lil Nas X shared an Instagram video from a hospital bed revealing he was suffering from facial paralysis. He later reassured fans that he was doing okay and asked them “stop being sad” for him: “Imma look funny for a lil bit but that’s it,” he wrote.

The rapper most recently released his EP, Days Before Dreamboy, in March.
