An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after a prank turned into a tragedy in Houston.
The child had been playing “ding-dong-ditch” with friends — a game where kids ring a doorbell and run off before anyone answers — around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, according to KHOU 11, ABC 13, and Click2Houston.
As the group ran away from one house, the homeowner allegedly opened fire, striking the boy multiple times.
Police responded quickly, and the boy was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in treatment, KHOU 11, ABC 13, and Click2Houston reported.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, but they confirmed someone was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, according to the outlets.
The following morning, on Sunday, Aug. 31, officers were seen bringing a man in handcuffs back to the home where the gunfire occurred, ABC 13 and Click2Houston reported.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information to contact the Houston Police Department (HPD).
