A man was found dead at the annual Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert.
According to a press release from Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen, a deputy was alerted on Saturday, Aug. 30, around 9:14 p.m. local time, that a man was lying in “a pool of blood.” This happened as the festival’s famous wooden effigy, known as “The Man,” was set on fire.
Deputies and Bureau of Land Management rangers arrived at the Black Rock City site and found an adult man who was already deceased.
Black Rock Rangers and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Division also responded to the scene.

The man’s identity has not yet been confirmed, and his body was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances,” Sheriff Allen said.
He added that more details will be released when possible, while also protecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities confirmed that a homicide investigation is underway.
Burning Man organizers issued a statement emphasizing that the “safety and well-being of our community are paramount.” They noted that free public WiFi is available at designated areas of the campsite so attendees can contact loved ones, and support services are also on-site.

“The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office investigates all deaths that occur in its jurisdiction,” the festival said.
This year’s Burning Man began on Aug. 24 and is scheduled to end on Sept. 1.
Last year, a woman also died at the festival after being found unresponsive. Despite emergency personnel attempting lifesaving measures, she could not be revived, Burning Man organizers said at the time.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss,” the statement read.
