A Russian mother of two died last week after falling nearly 300 feet while trying to take a selfie following a bungee jump, officials said.
The accident happened on Saturday, Aug. 30, according to a translated statement on Telegram from the country’s Investigative Committee.
The woman was identified by her bungee jumping group, 23BLOCK, as Elizaveta Gushchina.
“Under tragic circumstances, experienced jumper and mother of two children Liza passed away. Elizaveta Gushchina, together with her son Nikita, is a member of our sports team,” the organization wrote in a post on Russian social networking site Vkontakte, according to a translation.
“Now the whole team is mourning this loss,” the group added. “This is a very big tragedy for us.”
The Investigative Committee said Gushchina, whom authorities did not identify by name, “arrived at an unfinished boiler house with a chimney in the city of Pavlovsk in St. Petersburg to perform the jumps.”
“After completing the jump, she climbed the chimney to take a photo, where she slipped and fell from a height. The injuries she sustained were fatal,” the committee said.
Russian news outlet The Voice reported that Gushchina fell from a height of 88 meters, or about 288 feet.
The Investigative Department for the Pushkinsky District is now reviewing the circumstances of her death, according to the state committee’s Telegram statement.
