Bryan Kohberger revealed that he was diagnosed with four “mental health disorders” just a few months before he admitted to killing four University of Idaho students.

In a June court filing obtained by PEOPLE, Kohberger said he was diagnosed with: “Autism (level 1); OCD; ADHD; ARFID.”

All four diagnoses were made in February 2025. He also mentioned in the same document that he was taking only one prescription medication at the time: levothyroxine, which treats hypothyroidism and is one of the most-prescribed medications in the U.S.

Individuals with autism level 1 are high-functioning, show only a few symptoms, and often can manage everyday tasks on their own.

OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, usually involves repetitive behaviors to try to block out unwanted thoughts.

ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, can appear in different ways. Many people with ADHD have trouble paying attention, staying organized, keeping a schedule, or focusing on one task.

The fourth diagnosis, ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder), is an eating disorder. It often appears in children and causes very selective eating habits, which can limit a person’s diet, affect growth, and sometimes lead to malnutrition.

Kohberger did not claim that these diagnoses affected his ability to enter a guilty plea for the four murder charges.

He wrote in the filing that he understood if the judge accepted his plea, he would likely be sentenced to four life sentences in prison, plus an additional 10 years for a burglary charge.

The filing was dated June 29, just days before he formally entered his plea in court.

On July 2, Kohberger appeared in court and admitted to killing the four University of Idaho students: Madison Mogen, 21; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20.

Three weeks later, he was sentenced to four life sentences in prison for the murders.
