Tyler Robinson, who is accused of killing right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, appeared in court virtually for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 16. He wore what looked like a suicide-prevention vest.

This happened just hours after Robinson was formally charged with single counts of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and violent offense in the presence of a child. He also faces two counts each of obstruction of justice and witness tampering, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said at a press conference.

Gray also announced that he will seek the death penalty against Robinson.

During the hearing, Judge Tony Graf read the charges aloud, saying Robinson “intentionally selected” Kirk because of his “belief or perception regarding Charlie Kirk’s political expression.”

Robinson stayed mostly silent during the reading of the charges, only nodding and giving his name when the judge asked.

Judge Graf also issued a protective order for Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, which stops Robinson from contacting her.

Authorities say Kirk was shot from the roof of a building about 200 yards away while speaking at a Sept. 10 rally at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Robinson was arrested after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson allegedly admitted to a family member that he was involved, after seeing surveillance images released by the FBI. Family members and a friend reportedly convinced him to turn himself in.

According to a newly released charging document, Robinson sent a text on Sept. 10 to his roommate and romantic partner — who is transitioning from male to female — telling them to “look under my keyboard.”

The message allegedly said: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it,” according to the document.

When the roommate asked if he was serious, Robinson reportedly confirmed it and said he was “sorry to involve you” because he planned to keep it secret until he died.

When asked why he killed Kirk, Robinson allegedly said, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

Robinson allegedly planned the shooting for “a bit over a week.”

He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., where he will have legal representation. Judge Graf said a public defender will be appointed to represent him.
