Local authorities have confirmed that a body discovered in a wooded area along train tracks in a Massachusetts town belongs to a woman who had gone missing earlier this month.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the remains found by Massachusetts State Police on Friday, Sept. 19, near 419 Main Street in Wareham, were those of Amy Nadolny, 41.
Patty Nadolny, the victim’s mother, also confirmed her daughter’s death to NBC affiliate WBTS on Friday. She had been anxiously waiting for days, hoping for a phone call assuring her that her daughter was safe.
According to a missing persons flyer issued by the Middleborough Police Department and Wareham Police Department, Nadolny was last seen and heard from in Wareham on Sept. 7.
“She is a lifelong Middleboro resident,” the flyer read. “Her family is worried and seeking any information or leads.”
Nadolny was described as having dyed blonde hair and blue eyes.
On Friday, prior to identification, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office shared on X: “Today, MSP [Massachusetts State Police] located an unidentified female body in a wooded area near 419 Main Street in Wareham. The state OCME [office of chief medical examiner] will determine the manner and cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.”
The District Attorney’s statement to PEOPLE noted that Massachusetts State Police, along with the Middleborough and Wareham Police Departments, are conducting the investigation into the unattended death.
Residents in Wareham expressed sorrow following the news of Nadolny’s death.
“It’s horrible, it’s horrible,” Susan Murphy told WBTS.
