Man Says His Wife Is Mad He Used His Free Time to Watch TV Instead of Napping

A man took to Reddit’s AITAH forum after his wife got upset when he watched TV at a time they had previously agreed he would be sleeping.

In his post, he explained that he and his wife have a system that allows each of them to get a full night’s sleep while the other looks after their 9-month-old daughter. Their responsibilities start at bath time and continue until the next morning.

On Saturdays, one parent gets a lie-in while the other handles the baby’s morning routine, including breakfast, and then they swap roles on Sunday to ensure both get extra rest over the weekend.

“This weekend, I watched my daughter Friday night and Saturday morning until 9:15 when I woke up my wife in the spare room,” he said. “This morning, I decided to wake up at 7 a.m. to watch the F1 race. My wife came downstairs at 8:45 and got angry that I was awake and ‘watching TV’ instead of helping with my daughter.”

The disagreement escalated into an argument, with his wife criticizing him for not using the time as they had agreed.

“She is claiming ‘needing sleep is a necessity and watching TV is avoiding responsibility,’ whereas I said this is a ‘rules for thee and not for me’ situation,” he wrote.

“Am I the a—– for watching TV instead of sleeping in?” he asked.

Responses from the Reddit community largely supported him, emphasizing that he had the right to spend his time as he wished.

“Nta [not the a—–], whether you’re sleeping or relaxing in your own way, it was your morning off,” one commenter said. “You guys sound like you have a healthy division of baby labor. Don’t let this hiccup in communication get you guys down.”

Another added, “Nope … it was your day to rest … You just did that awake. I say this as a mom who’s the default parent. If it’s my sleep-in day and they are rare … I would expect I could spend my easy morning doing whatever I needed to recharge. NTA.”
